CHENGDU, June 28 (Xinhua) -- Ten hydrogen fuel cell buses have been put into commercial operation in Chengdu, capital of southwest China's Sichuan Province, as part of the country's environmental protection efforts.

Four hydrogen fuel buses, jointly produced by Dongfang Electric Corporation and Chengdu Bus Co., Ltd, were put into operation in the city's Pidu District, on Thursday.

Six already operating buses of this kind in the district have traveled 47,000 km and transported 64,000 passengers in total so far this year.

The vehicles, which produce no pollution, can run 500 to 600 km and a refuel of hydrogen takes three to five minutes, according to Dongfang Electric Corporation.

Sichuan plans to have a total of 50 hydrogen fuel buses in operation by the end of this year.

Several major Chinese cities including Shanghai and Wuhan, capital of Hubei Province, have plans to promote the use of hydrogen-powered buses.

By 2020, Shanghai aims to have 3,000 hydrogen-powered vehicles in operation, while Wuhan also plans to have 2,000 to 3,000 hydrogen-powered buses, shuttles or logistics vehicles on the road.
