MINSK, June 28 (Xinhua) -- The old airport of Minsk, the Minsk-1 airport, terminated its function after the last plane took off on Thursday, according to local media.

The equipment of the airport will be taken to the hangar at the new airport Minsk-2, now named the Minsk National Airport, in the capital city of Belarus.

The building of the former air terminal will be preserved to commemorate the airport, and the rest will be demolished.

A multi-functional complex with residential buildings, schools and kindergartens will be built in the area. The Minsk National Airport will gradually take over the burden of the air traffic in the city.

The Minsk-1 airport, built in 1933, was the major airport of Minsk until the new Minsk National Airport opened in 1982. It was reportedly shut down in December 2015.
