ABUJA, July 2 (Xinhua) -- Five Boko Haram fighters were killed by Nigerian government forces during an operation to clear the remnants of the terror group in the country's northeast region, the army said on Monday.
The army said the operation was held in Anadawa village in the northern state of Borno on June 30.
In a separate development, the army repelled an attack by the terror group in Bama area of Borno on Sunday.
Two civilians were killed and three others wounded as troops repelled the attack, according to Brig.-Gen. Texas Chukwu, spokesman for the Nigerian army.
Chukwu said 32 Boko Haram fighters had surrendered to troops in various locations in Borno, and were being screened and would be handed over to the appropriate authorities.
Nigeria has made considerable gains against the terror group, dislodging its fighters from the Sambisa Forest.
Two months ago, the army launched a four-month operation to totally defeat Boko Haram in the northeast and, by extension, the Lake Chad region.
Boko Haram has been blamed for the death of more than 20,000 people and displacement of 2.3 million others in Nigeria since 2009.
