NEW YORK, July 4 (Xinhua) -- A 34-year-old American man set a new world record Wednesday by devouring 74 hot dogs in 10 minutes at an annual hot dog eating contest in New York.
Joey Chestnut, the ten-time victor from San Jose, the U.S. state of California, broke his last year's record of 72 dogs and buns at the Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest at Coney Island.
Chestnut's win of the Mustard Belt in the men's competition, however, was marked with controversy when the judges thought he ate 64 hot dogs. But a review showed counters missed a plate and the final tally was updated to 74.
In the distant second behind Chestnut was Carmen Cincotti, who downed 45 hot dogs and buns.
In the women's competition, Miki Sudo, 32, defended her title, the fifth year in a row, chomping down 37 hot dogs and buns. However, she ate 41 hot dogs in 2017.
Both Chestnut and Sudo will take home a 10,000 U.S. dollars first-place prize.
