NEW YORK, June 6 (Xinhua) -- U.S. stocks opened mixed on Friday amid solid data from the U.S. labor market.

Shortly after the opening bell, the Dow Jones Industrial Average slid 54.91 points, or 0.23 percent, to 24,301.83. The S&P 500 was down 2.11 points, or 0.08 percent, to 2,734.50. The Nasdaq Composite Index climbed 3.81 points, or 0.05 percent, to 7,590.24.

Before the opening bell, the U.S. Labor Department released job reports.

Total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 213,000 in June, and the unemployment rate rose to 4.0 percent, the U.S. Labor Department said.

Job growth occurred in professional and business services, manufacturing and health care, while retail trade lost jobs, it said.

Wall Street also kept a close watch on the latest U.S.-China tariff moves.

The new U.S. tariffs on 34 billion U.S. dollars' worth of imports from China took effect on Friday. Immediately after that, China's retaliatory tariffs of equal scale went into force.

Concerns over an escalating trade war between the United States and China offset the optimism from solid employment data, experts said. Enditem
