"Ant-Man and the Wasp" tops N. American box office with 76 million USD launch

LOS ANGELES, July 8 (Xinhua) -- "Ant-Man and the Wasp" opened with 76 million U.S. dollars from 4,206 North American locations, making it the 20th consecutive Marvel film to open No. 1 at the box office.

The 2018 American superhero film, starring Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lilly, flew to a worldwide opening of 161 million U.S. dollars, including 85 million dollars from overseas markets.

Produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, the film is the sequel to 2015's Ant-Man, and the twentieth film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

The film is directed by Peyton Reed and written by the writing teams of Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, and Paul Rudd, Andrew Barrer, and Gabriel Ferrari.

Meanwhile, the family film "Incredibles 2" earned 29 million dollars and narrowly stole the No. 2 spot from Universal's "Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom," which ranked No. 3 domestically with 28.6 million dollars for a total of 333.3 million dollars.

Offshore, the science fiction adventure film earned another 26.7 million dollars for a foreign tally of 725.3 million dollars.

Universal and Blumhouse's "The First Purge" debuted on Independence Day, followed in fourth place domestically with 17.2 million dollars for a five-day debut of 31.1 million dollars.

Internationally, the film, directed by Gerard McMurray, has gathered 10.9 million dollars from its first 26 markets for a global bow of 42 million dollars.

Also in the top five is Sony's "Sicario: Day of the Soldado." The Benicio Del Toro and Josh Brolin-led sequel picked up another 7.6 million dollars, its the domestic tally to 35 million dollars. With 4.2 million dollars overseas, "Soldado" has collected 39.2 million dollars.
