BEIJING, July 9 (Xinhua) -- The Asia-Pacific region's air freight sector is showing signs of accelerated demand, according to the International Air Transport Association (IATA) on Monday.
As the world's largest freight-flying region, the Asia-Pacific market contributes close to 37 percent of global air freight, said IATA, referring to its latest released data for global air freight markets.
Global air freight markets showed that the air freight demand, measured in freight tonne kilometers (FTKs), saw a 4.2 percent year-on-year increase in May this year. The figure for Asia-Pacific airlines was 4.9 percent, an increase over the 3.9 percent recorded in the previous month.
The risks from protectionist measures impacting the region are disproportionately high, said IATA.
After a weak start to 2018, the demand for global air freight has seen a modest trend upwards.
Influencing factors such as trade tensions and the low level of global manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) might see air freight transport grow at a slower pace, according to IATA.
