DAMASCUS, July 19 (Xinhua) -- An explosion was heard west of the Syrian capital Damascus on Thursday afternoon, according to Xinhua reporter and state TV.

The explosion rocked the Mashrou Dummar, one of the upscale areas. It's still unknown what caused the explosion, but the state TV said one person was wounded.

The reverberation of the blast was also felt like a strong thunder in Mazzeh area west of Damascus.

Some pro-government activists posted photos purporting to show a small hole in the ground and some broken glass.

The state media outlets have stopped short of giving any details about the incident.

On the opposition side, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the four people were wounded in the explosion.

The Britain-based watchdog group noted that the circumstances of the blast are still "murky" as it's not clear whether it was an explosive device detonated in that area.

The capital Damascus has enjoyed unprecedented clam since the rebels were completely dislodged.

The Syrian army declared the entire capital safe in May after the Eastern Ghouta countryside returned under the government control.
