37,398 arrested in gang crackdown in first half of year

SHENZHEN, July 26 (Xinhua) -- A total of 37,398 suspects were arrested, and 15,548 indicted in a crackdown on gangs and organized crime in China in the first half of this year.

The Supreme People's Procuratorate (SPP) has been closely cooperating with the Supreme People's Court, the Ministry of Public Security (MPS) and the Ministry of Justice in formulating guidelines on handling gang-related and organized crime, according to a statement issued at a seminar for senior prosecutors which opened Wednesday.

It has also worked with the MPS in overseeing the handling of 24 major cases, the statement said.

According to the statement, procuratorates across the country have approved the arrest of 533,247 people and prosecuted 762,292 for committing serious crimes, among which 21,318 were arrested and 22,109 prosecuted for violent crimes such as homicide, kidnapping, and arson.

Meanwhile, procuratorates have deepened their efforts in fighting crimes targeting minors, as well as those related to the environment, resources, online finance, and financial fraud.
