CAIRO, July 30 (Xinhua) -- A number of rival Syrian opposition factions signed on Monday an Egyptian-brokered cease-fire deal in Cairo, Egypt's state MENA news agency reported.

The agreement, signed between factions from northern and eastern Syria, was sponsored by Egypt and guaranteed by Russia, according to MENA.

The deal was also mediated by Ahmed Jarba, head of al-Ghad Movement, a Cairo-based Syrian opposition group.

Under the deal, rival groups will join anti-terror activities in Syria as well as work to reach a peaceful political settlement to the Syrian crisis.

The signing came two weeks after other Syrian opposition armed groups signed similar agreements in Cairo.

The Egyptian leadership has always expressed support for a political settlement for the Syrian crisis in a way that ends bloodshed in Syria and maintains the unity of its territories.

Since its eruption in March 2011, the Syrian crisis has claimed the lives of about half a million people and displaced and wounded over 14 million others.

Russian troops in Syria have been launching bombing campaigns in support of the government forces, while a U.S.-led international anti-terror coalition has been launching airstrikes against Islamic State (IS) targets in the conflict-stricken country.
