NEW YORK, July 31 (Xinhua) -- New Yorkers could spare a flight ticket this year to experience the unique charm of China's famous mountains as a photo exhibition is being staged at China Institute in New York City.

The Art of the Mountain: Through the Chinese Photographer's Lens, which runs until Feb. 17, 2019, features three sections of selected works from dozens of Chinese artists.

Revered Mountains of China introduces the geography, history, legends, and culture that are associated with Chinese mountains.

Landscape Aesthetics in Photography presents the images of Mount Huangshan, also known as Yellow Mountain, to reflect the renowned Chinese landscape painting aesthetic and its influence.

And New Landscape Photography includes the works in which Chinese photographers express their thoughts on the role of mountains in society.

In Chinese legend, mountains are the pillars that hold up the sky. Mountains were seen as places that nurture life. Their veneration took the form of rituals, retreat from social society, and aesthetic appreciation with a defining role in Chinese art and culture.

The exhibition, which opened in February, is curated by Willow Weilan Hai, Director, China Institute Gallery; Jerome Silbergeld, P.Y. and Kinmay W. Tang Professor of Chinese Art History at Princeton University, Emeritus; and photography critic and photographer Jiang Rong.
