NAIROBI, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) -- Kenya on Thursday named a provisional 20-member team for the Africa Swimming Championships, which will be held in Algiers, Algeria next month.

Financial constraints and poor planning locked out Kenya from the last championships, which were held in Bloemfontein, South Africa two years ago.

However, Kenya Swimming Federation (KSF) is hopeful they will get support from the government.

Kenya Swimming Federation Interim Management Committee official Reginald Okumu said the final squad will be named later in August.

Newly Africa Youth Games champion Maria Brunlehner will lead provisional squad of 20 swimmers to the championships.

Brunlehner bagged gold in the 50m and 100m freestyle and a silver in the 50m backstroke in the youth games, which was also hosted by Algeria.

Top swimmers from Algeria, South Africa, Egypt, Tunisia and Zimbabwe will provide the challenge as the Kenyan youth star seeks to stamp her authority on the sport.

Mario will be joined by her sister Sylvia Brunlehner, Thailand-based Emily Muteti and USA-based Rebecca Kamau. Enditem
