LUSAKA, Aug. 3 (Xinhua) -- Zambia's anti-corruption body on Friday welcomed the conviction of five former public workers for siphoning hundreds of public resources meant for improving health services.

On Thursday, a court in Lusaka, the country's capital, sentenced five former workers in the Ministry of Health to 18 years in jail for money laundering and theft by public servant between 2007 and 2009.

The thefts prompted the Swedish government to suspend funding to Zambia's health sector.

Timothy Moono, Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Corporate Affairs Manager, said the conviction of the former public workers should serve as a warning to other workers in government on the dangers of engaging in corrupt activities.

He said the anti-corruption agency was happy that the prosecution team worked hard to ensure the conviction of the former public workers, adding that it was right step in tackling corruption in the public service.
