BERLIN, Aug. 8 (Xinhua) -- Miltiadis Tentoglou won the men's long jump gold after leaping 8.25 meters at the inaugural multi-sport European Championships in Berlin's Olympic Stadium on Wednesday.

The 20-year-old youngster clinched his first gold medal in a senior tournament.

Germany's Fabian Heinle jumped to silver with 8.13 meters. Ukraine's Sergej Nykyforow took the bronze also with 8.13 meters but with a weaker second jump.

"The crowd helped me to win the silver medal. They helped me to jump 8.13m twice," Heinle said.

Bronze winner Nykyforow hoped for a better result: "I was thinking about becoming the European champion and I tried hard, but it just did not work out today."

The European Championships is jointly hosted by Glasgow and Berlin. Within 10 days, more than 4,500 athletes will be competing for 187 gold medals. Enditem
