BERLIN, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) -- The former Tour de France champion Jan Ullrich has been arrested in Frankfurt after being accused of physically-assaulting a sex worker in his hotel room, a spokesperson for the Frankfurt State Prosecution Office confirmed on Friday.

"Apparently there was a fight which led to a physical attack on the woman. The suspect is accused of having strangled the woman until she fainted in this context," the spokesperson told press.

The prosecutors noted, however, that no formal arrest warrant had been filed against Ullrich so far and that he had only been taken into temporary police custody for the time being.

According to the German prosecutor, the cyclist, who was recently arrested on the Spanish island of Mallorca for rowdy behavior, was under the influence of alcohol and drugs when he attacked the sex worker.

Police officers who rushed to the scene reported that the victim required medical attention due to injuries suffered.

The 44-year-old former cyclist had travelled from Mallorca to Germany on Thursday night where he was scheduled to begin therapy at a clinic in Bavaria to address his addiction problem.
