BERLIN, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) -- Justyna Swiety-Ersetic won the gold medal in the 400m final after clocking 50.41 seconds at the first edition of the multi-sport European Championships in Berlin's Olympic Stadium on Saturday.

Greece's Maria Belibasaki, who led the race on the finishing straight but couldn't hold the pace, took the silver medal with a national record of 50.45 seconds followed by Netherland's Lisanne de Witte, who clocked also a national record with 50.77 seconds.

"I am shocked, really surprised. It is the second fastest time in Polish history and also the first European gold for our country at this distance, so it means a lot," gold medallist Swiety-Ersetic said after the race.

The European Championships is the first edition of a new multi-sport event, which is jointly hosted by Glasgow and Berlin. More than 4,500 athletes are competing for 187 gold medals until August 12.
