Palestinian youth unemployment rate over 55 pct

RAMALLAH, Aug. 12 (Xinhua) -- Palestinian youth unemployment rate among graduates reached 55.8 percent in 2017, compared with 41.5 percent in 2007, the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics said Sunday.

The bureau released the statistics on the occasion of the International Youth Day, saying the situation is alike among youth who have not completed their schools and youth in the West Bank.

The statistics also showed a high rate of 41.1 percent of youth performing manual labor in 2017, higher compared with 33.8 percent in 2007.

Moreover, unemployment of female is higher than male, the statistics suggested. It showed that female more commonly seen working in the services sector, while trade, restaurant and hotel sectors are the most accommodating for male youth employment.

Less than 1 percent of the Palestinian youth work in decision-making positions.

Poverty rate among youth, according to the statistics, was 29.5 percent.

The reports also highlighted that one-third of the Palestinian population is youth.
