BERLIN, Aug. 12 (Xinhua) -- Netherland's Sifan Hassan secured the women's 5,000m gold with a championship record of 14 minutes 46.12 seconds at the European Championships in Berlin Olympic Stadium on Sunday.

Hassan piled on the pressure in the last lap forcing the competitors to lose contract.

"That was an amazing race. My plan was to go in front on the last 800m for the final sprint. I did what my coach told me. Winning this gold medal is very pleasant. I have to get more experience in the 5,000m, it is very special for me to improve on the 5,000m," Hassan said after the race.

Britain's Eilish McColgan clocked 14 minutes 53.05 seconds to take the silver and Turkey's Yasemin Can won the bronze with 14 minutes 57.63 seconds.

The first edition of the European Championships is a multi-sport event and feature seven sports including aquatics events, rowing, gymnastics, cycling, triathlon and golf in Glasgow and athletics in Berlin.

The competition is running from Aug. 2-12.
