BAGHDAD, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) -- Two people were killed and 15 others injured Tuesday in a roadside bomb explosion at a popular marketplace in eastern Baghdad, an Interior Ministry source said.

The incident took place in the morning when a roadside bomb ripped through Mreidy outdoors market in the Shiite bastion of Sadr City neighborhood, the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

A videotape circulated on local media showed the wreckage of stalls, and many angry people collecting vegetables in the market.

No group has so far claimed responsibility for the attack, but the Islamic State (IS) militant group, in most cases, is responsible for such attacks, targeting crowded areas including markets, cafes and mosques across Iraq.

Many of Iraqi cities, including the capital Baghdad, have been witnessing tangible improvement in security situation since the Iraqi security forces managed to regain control of IS strongholds across the country late in 2017.

However, small groups and individuals of IS militants melted in urban areas or regrouped in deserts and rugged areas in Iraq looking for safe havens. They are still capable of carrying out attacks from time to time against the security forces and civilians despite operations to hunt them down.
