BEIJING, Aug. 15 (Xinhua) -- Chinese police will step up inspections of high-risk vehicles amid the busy summer holiday travel season, the Ministry of Public Security has said.

Since August, the country has reported a series of severe traffic accidents in places such as south China's Guangdong Province, involving speeding, fatigued driving and drunk driving, the ministry said in a statement Tuesday.

Police will tighten check-ups on high-risk vehicles, including chartered buses for tourists, vehicles carrying hazardous substances and heavy trucks, and crack down on overloading, speeding and fatigued driving.

The ministry also required local traffic control authorities to enhance monitoring of streets under construction, transport enterprises and travel agencies.

Since summer sees a lot of tourists and is companied with high temperatures and heavy rainstorms, the ministry warned people of traffic safety risks and suggested them to take necessary precaution.

Nine people were killed and two were injured after a truck overturned and fell on two cars in Guangdong on Aug. 1.
