Chinese mainland, Hong Kong dominate Macao's external bank assets, liabilities

MACAO, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) -- The business outside Macao in the local banking sector was dominated by entities from Chinese mainland and Hong Kong, the special administrative region' monetary authorities said on Thursday.

According to the statistics released by the Monetary Authority of Macao, at the end of June 2018, claims on Chinese mainland and Hong Kong occupied 35.6 percent and 34.5 percent of total external assets, while claims on Portugal and Britain took up 1.6 percent and 1.3 percent respectively.

Meanwhile, claims on Portuguese-speaking countries and countries along the "Belt and Road" occupied respective shares of 1.8 percent and 3.7 percent.

On external liabilities, Hong Kong and Chinese mainland accounted for 51.1 percent and 22.2 percent of the total respectively, while Britain and Germany took up 2.8 percent and 1.0 percent respectively.

Portuguese-speaking countries and countries along the "Belt and Road" represented 0.8 percent and 8.5 percent respectively.
