PALEMBANG, Indonesia, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) -- South Korea trashed the Maldives 8-0 in a Group A qualifying match of the women's soccer tournament in the 2018 Asian Games at the Jakabaring Stadium here on Sunday.

South Korea managed to dominate the whole match as the Maldives had no chance to even advance past the halfway line. Forward Son Hwayeon scored three times in the one-sided affair.

The other goals were scored by Ji Soyun, Moon Mira and Lee Eunmi. Aminath Camilla scored an own goal just after the 30 minute mark to compound the Maldives' misery.

"My players are focused on at least reaching the semifinal. We expect to win each match and to qualify for that," said South Korea's coach Yoon Dukyeo.

Praising the team's performance, top scorer Son said it gives her team an enormous boost ahead of the rest of the tournament.

Earlier, Yoon's team beat Chinese Taipei 2-1. And South Korea will face Indonesia in the last group match on Tuesday.

South Korea is ranked number 15 in the world in FIFA's global rankings. Japan is sixth and the DPRK (Democratic People's Republic of Korea) is four places below the Japanese.
