BEIJING, Aug. 20 (Xinhua) -- The number of computer terminals and servers infected with internet viruses dropped 61.9 percent year-on-year in the first half of 2018, according to a report on China's internet development released Monday.

A total of 4.83 million infected devices were detected, said the report citing data from the National Computer Network Emergency Response Technical Team Coordination Center (CNCERT).

In the first six months, the center detected 15,672 websites that had been tampered with by hackers, down nearly half from the same period of last year.

It also recorded a 35.2-percent drop in the number of websites with backdoor malware.

However, 54 percent of China's internet population said they had encountered cybersecurity problems in the first half, up 1.4 percentage points from the previous survey.

The number of cybersecurity incidents received by CNCERT increased 12.2 percent to 54,190.

At the end of June, China had an internet population of 802 million and 5.44 million websites, according to the report released by the China Internet Network Information Center.
