JOHANNESBURG, Aug. 20 (Xinhua) -- The Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) closed in the firmer territory on Monday, buoyed by Naspers, while banks and retailers shrugged off a weaker South Africa's rand.

Naspers which owns 31.2 percent of Tencent was up 2.1 percent to settle at R3,275.

South Africa's rand remained under pressure from a weaker lira after S&P and Moody's on Friday downgraded Turkey one notch further below investment grade, citing the recent extreme economic and financial volatility along with increasing tensions with the US.

The all share closed 0.88 percent up at 57,145.62 points and the top 40 rose 0.99 percent. Retailers rose 0.39 percent and banks gained 1.07 percent.

Among banks, Standard Bank rose 0.94 percent to R185.5 and FirstRand 1.4 percent to R63.85. Enditem
