NAIROBI, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) -- Only eight teams have confirmed participation at this year's Women's Under-20 African Nations Championship due to start in Nairobi from Aug. 26 to Sept. 2.

Tarek Al-Adwar, the Confederation of Africa Volleyball officer, said all the top guns are in contention and that the event will produce top performance.

"The confirmed teams are hosts Kenya, defending champions Egypt along with DR Congo, Rwanda, Mauritius, Cameroon, Nigeria and Uganda," Al-Adwar told Xinhua on Wednesday.

Underdogs Tanzania and Guinea have their participation pending despite having put in a word of their intent to send a team each.

"They are still pending to take part in the competition. Once they pay up we will include them," he added.

Egypt won the last edition in 2017 after beating Tunisia in the playoff 3-0 and 3-1. After Algeria won the first edition in 2002 hosted by Tunisia, the Egyptian team swept the title for the following seven consecutive times.

However, Kenya, Rwanda and Cameroon are some of the teams that are aiming to stake claim to the title and ruffle the North Africa order.

The competition will act also as a qualifier for the FIVB World Championship of this age category. Kenya team is trained by Paul Gitau and are in camp in Nairobi. Enditem
