SYDNEY, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) -- Australia's oldest university, the University of Sydney, has been granted heritage listing in the State of New South Wales (NSW), where it has stood since 1850.

Also granted heritage status were associated residential colleges, and Victoria Park, a vibrant green space close to the heart of Sydney's urban sprawl.

"It is only fitting that Australia's oldest university should be on our state heritage register," NSW Heritage Minister Gabrielle Upton said.

"The land was reserved by Governor Phillip in 1790 for use by church, Crown and school' and the university was established in 1850."

The University's oldest buildings have long been admired for their venerable and distinguished appearances which Upton said are some of the most important examples of Gothic and Tudor revival style architecture in Australia.

The site's colleges, libraries, museums, education, public and recreational spaces provide opportunities for people from all over the world to interact for now, Upton said.

"The University and its colleges provide opportunities for students to learn in an environment that is looking to the future and proud of its history."
