SKOPJE, Aug. 29 (Xinhua) -- Macedonian Ministry of Interior Affairs and the United States (US) Department of Energy signed on Wednesday a memorandum of cooperation on preventing illicit trafficking of dangerous radioactive materials.

The memorandum of cooperation was signed in Skopje by Macedonian Interior Affairs Minister Oliver Spasovski and U.S. Ambassador Jess Baily.

Spasovski said that this memo will further contribute to enhance the detection and prevention of the illicit trafficking of nuclear and radioactive materials by introducing higher technical, operative standards.

According to Spasovski, the institution that will engage in this will be the Ministry of Interior Affairs, Customs Administration and the Radiation Safety Directorate in Macedonia.

Moreover, the minister noted that by the end of 2018 the U.S. National Nuclear Security Administration Office will donate two mobile radiation detection systems worth 555,000 U.S. dollars to Macedonia.

The American side will also provide training for operating and maintaining the mobile radiation detection systems.
