China lead medal table at 18th Asian Games

JAKARTA, Aug. 31 (Xinhua) -- China continued their march towards the final medal table glory as the Asian sporting powerhouse bagged six gold medals on Friday and remained runaway leaders at the Asian Games with two matchdays to go.

In diving, the athletes from China made more splash as they had one-two finish in both events contested on Friday.

In a battle of the reigning world champion and defending champion, Xie Siyi was the one who took the men's 3m springboard title after beating teammate Cao Yuan for the crown.

Cao, the Rio Olympic champion, led the first four rounds before Xie had a day-high 407B (inward 3 1/2 somersaults) for 105.45 points and claimed the victory with a total of 560.80 points.

Cao had to concede to the silver medal with 540.05 and Chew Yi Wei of Malaysia collected 456.20 for the bronze.

In the women's 1m springboard, Wang Han and Chen Yiwen also gave China a one-two finish.

Wang, the silver medalist four years ago in Incheon, dominated the event and scored a total of 323.55 points and Chen had 306.50. Kim Su-ji of South Korea came third in 265.35.

In sailing, Chinese athletes called the shots by claiming three gold medals. Bi Kun won gold in RS:X men race event while Chen Peina stormed to a RS:X women race gold. Chen Hao and Tan Yue teamed up to win a mixed RS one race gold for China.

Elsewhere, Zhang Mingyu added a gold medal from the women's modern pentathlon for China.

In women's football final, China lost to Japan 1-0 to take a silver while Chinese women's volleyball team defeated Japan to reach final.

China now lead the medal table with 118 gold, 85 silver and 60 bronze medals.
