DUBAI, Aug. 31 (Xinhua) -- The Abu Dhabi police have established a nuclear security unit to respond to possible nuclear emergencies, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) state news agency WAM reported Friday.

As the UAE capital, Abu Dhabi is currently building four nuclear power plants, the first of which is ready for operation by late 2019.

The terms of reference of the new security unit include preparation and review of response nuclear security plans, establishment of nuclear and radioactive risks registry and provision of material and human resources.

The UAE became a party to the Non-Proliferation Treaty in 1996, and the Gulf Arab state is also a partner nation on the Global Initiative to Combat Nuclear Terrorism.
