PHNOM PENH, Sept. 4 (Xinhua) -- Four men had died after a lift they were in fell from the sixth floor in an under-construction hotel building in western Cambodia's Pailin province on Tuesday morning, the National Police said.

"Four people were killed immediately and one was seriously injured after elevator cables snapped and the elevator fell from the sixth floor of an under-construction 12-storey building," the National Police reported on its website.

Overload of people and construction materials was blamed for the tragic accident, the police said.

Construction industry is booming in the Southeast Asian nation, but safety standards on construction sites remain a problem.

The Building and Wood Workers Trade Union Federation conducted a survey on construction site safety standards and interviewed more than 1,000 construction workers at 48 construction sites in Phnom Penh last year.

The results indicated that 12 percent of respondents felt that their construction sites were unsafe and such injuries were common.

The construction industry has employed about 260,000 workers, according to government statistics.
