TRIPOLI, Sept. 4 (Xinhua) -- Violence in Libya killed 22 civilians and injured 3 in August, the UN Support Mission in Libya said Tuesday.

"From August 1 to August 31, 2018, the United Nations Support Mission in Libya documented 25 civilian casualties, 22 deaths and 3 injuries, during the conduct of hostilities across Libya," the Mission said in a report.

"Victims included 14 men, 2 woman, 4 boys and 2 girls, and 2 men and 1 woman injured. The actual number of civilian casualties is believed to be higher," the report said.

Gunfire, shelling and explosive remnants of war caused the majority of the casualties, the report added.

The mission warned warring parties in Libya against "use of mortars, other indirect weapons and imprecise aerial bombardments in civilian-populated areas."

It also urged them not to place fighters or other military objectives in populated areas.

Since the 2011 uprising that toppled former leader Muammar Gaddafi's regime, Libya has been plunged into escalating violence, unrest and political division.
