ZAGREB, Sept. 18 (Xinhua) -- An 84-year-old man had died in Croatia due to complications caused by the West Nile virus (WNV), Croatian news agency Hina reported on Tuesday.

The man is the second victim of this disease in Croatia this year and the first one in the capital Zagreb.

Croatian Institute of Public Health announced on Sept. 11 that a total of 39 people have been diagnosed with the WNV in the country, which claimed its first victim in August while four people are still in critical condition, Hina reports.

The West Nile virus is a disease that is most often transmitted by infected mosquitoes and birds. In Croatia, all patients have been infected in the eastern parts of the country or the capital.

According to the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control, by Sept. 6 there were 1,112 cases of WNV infections in Europe and 71 people had died. Enditem
