Four-time Olympic gold medalist fencer Kulcsar dies at 77

BUDAPEST, Sept. 20 (Xinhua) -- Four-time Olympic gold medalist and three-time world champion Hungarian fencer Gyozo Kulcsar died at 77, the Hungarian Olympic Committee annouced here on Thursday.

Kulcsar was one of the most famous Hungarian athletes, who did not only excell as an athlete, but has also been one of the finest coaches in Hungary - his career had been longer than half a century: 52 years.

He competed in the individual and team epee events at the 1964, 1968, 1972 and 1976 Olympics and won four gold (one individual and three team) and two individual bronze medals. He also won three world titles with the Hungarian team, in 1970, 1971 and 1978.

After retiring from competitions Kulcsar worked as a fencing coach, in Hungary and in Italy. He received the highest merit from the Hungarian government, the title of "Athlete of the Nation" in 2004, beside many other prizes.
