NEW DELHI, Sept. 21 (Xinhua) -- At least six fishermen died and six others sustained injuries after being electrocuted while fishing in a waterbody in the northeastern Indian state of Assam Friday, police said.

The incident took place in a large pond in Rupohi area of the state's Nagaon district.

"Some 12 fishermen were fishing in the pond when suddenly a live high-voltage wire that was hanging over it fell in the water. All of them were soon electrocuted," a police official said.

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has ordered Power Minister Kesab Gogoi to rush to the spot and take necessary action, local media reports said.

"Preliminary probe suggests it was an act of negligence on part of the local power department. Even local residents told us the same. However, a proper investigation has been ordered into the incident," the official added.
