TOKYO, Sept. 25 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks opened essentially flat Tuesday, as a comparatively weak yen encouraged buying, while selling was triggered by U.S. shares retreating overnight.

As of 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average shed 46.12 points, or 0.19 percent, from Friday to 23,823.81.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, edged up 0.07 points, or 0.00 percent, at 1,804.09.

Farm and pharmaceutical issues comprised early gainers, while oil and coal product, marine transportation and machinery issues comprised those that declined the most in the opening minutes from the morning bell.

Financial markets here were closed on Monday for a national holiday.
