RAMALLAH, Sept. 27 (Xinhua) -- A top Palestinian official on Thursday criticized as "misleading" the speech made by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the 73rd session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

"Netanyahu insists on misleading the international community and exporting his old falsehoods that criminalize the victim and blame them in order to protect the system of the colonial occupation," Saeb Erekat, secretary general of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) Executive Committee, said in an emailed press statement.

"The peace that Netanyahu wants requires a Palestinian state on 1967 borders with east Jerusalem as its capital and a fair solution to Palestinian refugees issue in accordance to resolution 194," he said.

The veteran Palestinian negotiator also said, "Netanyahu's speech clearly shows Israel's systematic denial of the inalienable rights of our people to self-determination and freedom."

Earlier in the day, the Palestinian consensus government called on the international community to take the speech made by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas at the UNGA as a reference for any future move to revive peace in the Middle East.

Spokesman Yousef al-Mahmoud said in a press statement that the speech by Abbas is so important in all its dimensions and its cultural and humanitarian implications.

"The speech touches the spirit of love, peace, dialogue and adherence to the struggle and the struggle for freedom and independence, which is enshrined in all the norms and international agreements and laws," said al-Mahmoud.

In his speech, Abbas blamed Israel for damaging the peace process in the Middle East and accused the United States for being biased towards Israel.
