CAIRO, Oct. 2 (Xinhua) -- Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry has appointed Ahmed Hafez as his new spokesman after former spokesperson Ahmed Abu Zeid has been named the new ambassador to Canada, the foreign ministry said in a statement on Tuesday.

Hafez has been the deputy chief of Egypt's representation office to the Palestinian Authority in Ramallah and previously served in Egypt's embassies in Washington and Tel Aviv, according to the statement.

The new spokesman also worked at the foreign minister's office as a diplomat in charge of affairs related to the Middle East peace process as well as the Palestinian-Israeli affairs.

"It is noteworthy that Ahmed Abu Zeid, the former foreign ministry's spokesman, was appointed by a presidential decree issued in August as ambassador to Canada," said the statement, noting that Abu Zeid will soon fly to Canada to assume post.
