DAR ES SALAAM, Oct. 8 (Xinhua) -- Tanzanian authorities on Monday directed the nation's state-owned tourism body to embark on active marketing of its tourist attractions.

Deputy Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism Japhet Hasunga said the Tanzania Tourist Board (TTB) should be creative in marketing the country's tourism potential and stop lamenting about lack of funds all the time.

"I want TTB to be pro-active and creative in designing approaches to selling Tanzania as a safari destination. And also try to use the best technology possible because we are now in the digital era," Hasunga said when he visited TTB offices in the commercial capital, Dar es Salaam.

He said TTB has not been active enough in using available opportunities to promote the country's tourism potential.

"I expect you to draw a social media strategy because many people today use that platform and it will be a pleasure to see every citizen promoting Tanzania's tourist spots so that we can bring in more visitors," he said.

Hasunga said funds allocated for marketing activities should be used as planned and warned against misuse or mis-allocation of the resources.

A report released in June 2017 rated Tanzania's tourism industry as one of the fastest growing sectors in the country, with figures showing a surge on tourist arrivals.

Tourism has been Tanzania's largest foreign exchange earner since 2012, contributing an annual 2 billion U.S. dollars, equivalent to 25 percent of total exchange earnings, according to government data. Enditem
