Aftershock of 6.2 magnitude hits off eastern Papua New Guinea

SYDNEY, Oct. 11 (Xinhua) -- A 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck off eastern Papua New Guinea at 0900 AEDT on Thursday, the latest aftershock following a 7.1-magnitude earthquake that hit the area earlier in the morning with no immediate reports of casualties or damage, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center.

The latest tremor was recorded at a latitude of 4.9 degrees south and a longitude of 151.75 degrees east, with a depth of 80 km, reported the center.

The 7.1-magnitude quake hit near the country's eastern New Britain island at 0748 AEDT, according to the center.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center initially issued a tsunami warning for the region but the threat subsequently passed.
