ROME, Oct. 13 (Xinhua) -- Former Italy international Antonio Cassano Saturday announced his retirement just days after returning to training.

"The day has come where you decide that it's really over. I have other priorities now," said the 36-year-old in a statement.

Cassano began training last Monday with Virtus Entella, a Serie C side based near his current home in Genoa.

"Over the last few days of training, I realized that I no longer have the mentality to train consistently," said Cassano.

The former Roma and Real Madrid player last played competitive match for Sampdoria in May 2016.

He scored 10 goals in 39 appearances for Italy between 2003 and 2014, and won a Liga title with Real Madrid and Serie A with AC Milan in his career.
