JERUSALEM, Oct. 14 (Xinhua) -- The Israeli government approved on Sunday 22 million new shekels (about 6.07 million U.S. dollars) to build a new Jewish neighborhood in the Palestinian West Bank city of Hebron.

The new construction will be carried out at the site of a former Israeli military base near a main road in Hebron.

The plan had already been approved by the Israeli Civil Administration for the West Bank and the state would be able to begin construction after the budget is received.

The neighborhood will include 31 housing units and several kindergartens and public areas. Its approval is the first construction of a settlement in Hebron for more than a decade.

According to the government's decision, construction will be carried out within the framework of the policy of promoting "the development of the Jewish community in the city" on land designated as private Jewish land.

The budget will come from 14 Israeli ministries, and part of the money will come at the expense of next year's budget.
