HAIKOU, Oct. 24 (Xinhua) -- German rider Lucas Carstensen from the Bike Aid team won the second stage of the 2018 Tour of Hainan in Chengmai county, South China's Hainan province on Wednesday.

The second day of the road race saw the peloton catch the leading two riders in the last 120 meters, with the 24-year-old German crossing the line fastest in a fierce sprint.

Carstensen suffered an early crash en route to the stage victory. "The crash wasn't so bad and I came back after 5 kilometers, so it didn't do anything [bad] in the sprint," he said.

He attributed the victory to the teamwork, fighting for the best position for him in front of the finish line.

The second stage started from Danzhou city to Chengmai county, covering a total distance of 139.6 kilometers, including the first climbing point of the nine-day tour, which was won by Peter Schulting from the Monkey Town Continental Team.

Schulting seized the polka-dot jersey after becoming the best climber.

Dylan Page of the Swiss Cycling Team claimed the yellow jersey with the highest total score and the green jersey for the best sprinter.

Chinese rider Zhangzheng of the Hengxiang Cycling Team keeps the blue jersey as the leading Asian cyclist on the ranking list.

The third stage will be from Chengmai county to Qionghai city, via Haikou, the capital city of Hainan and Ding'an county.
