BERLIN, Nov. 4 (Xinhua) -- Borussia Monchengladbach climbed on the second place of the standings after easing past newly promoted Fortuna Dusseldorf 3-0 at the closer of the 10th round in Bundesliga on Sunday.
The "Foals" took the reins from the kick off but lacked in penetration to overcome Dusseldorf's well-positioned midfield.
Hence, the visitors were only able to produce one promising chance in the first half when Thorgan Hazard tested Dusseldorf's goalkeeper Michael Rensing at the half-hour mark.
Dieter Hecking's men grabbed a perfect start into the second half as Kaan Ayhan's hand ball inside the box allowed Thorgan Hazard to open the scoring from the penalty spot in the 48th minute.
Dusseldorf's Ayhan remained in the thick of things as his misplaced pass was utilized by Jonas Hofmann to double the lead with 67 minutes into the encounter.
To make things worse, Monchengladbach pressed forward and tripled the lead in the 82nd minute when Hazard hammed home from 17 meters to put the victory beyond doubt.
With the win, Borussia Monchengladbach wrapped up their 6th win of the season and ousted Bayern Munich from the 2nd place in the standings while Fortuna Dusseldorf suffered the sixth straight loss to stay on the 17th position, which is a direct relegation spot.
"We secured a deserved win today. We did our best in the first half to break the deadlock but we kept the pace and got rewarded in the second half," Monchengladbach coach Dieter Hecking said.
"We staged a good performance until the hand-ball penalty. The opener played into Monchengladbach's cards. They benefitted on our mistakes," Dusseldorf coach Friedhelm Funkel said.
Elsewhere, Mainz returned to winning ways after upsetting Werder Bremen 2-1 on home soil.
Jean-Philippe Mateta and Jean-Philippe Gbamin gave Mainz the 2-0 before Bremen's veteran striker Claudio Pizarro reduced the arrears in the closing period.
With the result, Bremen slipped to the 6th place whereas Mainz climbed on 12th position.
