LONDON, Nov. 10 (Xinhua) -- Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic are the two main attractions when the ATP Finals begin in London on Sunday.
The event brings together the eight highest ranked fit players in the World to bring the curtain down on the 2018 season.
Although Djokovic goes into the tournament as world number one, many fans will be rooting for 37-year-old Federer to win his 100th career singles title in London.
"I'm extraordinarily happy to have won 99 (titles) - I'm happy I won the amount of matches and tournaments this year to get me there."
"Every tournament I will play for the rest of my life I will have a chance to reach my 100th, but reaching it here in London would be extra special, having achieved so much success here and because of the importance of the tournament," commented Federer, who will play his first game against Japan's Kai Nishikori in Sunday evening.
The tournament opens on Sunday afternoon when Wimbledon finalist Kevin Anderson takes on French Open runner-up Dominic Thiem, but fans will have to wait until Monday before Djokovic plays his first match.
"Returning to number one is extra special this year because of the journey I've been through in the last 15 months. It turned out to be a perfect five months of the year, with two Grand Slam titles," said Djokovic, who won the US Open and Wimbledon.
The 31-year-old faces John Isner, who is ranked tenth in the world. The American is playing in London after both world number 2, Rafael Nadal and fourth ranked Juan Martin del Potro were forced to withdraw through injury.
Nadal confirmed a week ago that he would not be able to play in London after undergoing ankle surgery in a bid to be fit for the start of the 2019 season, while Del Porto hurt his knee while playing in Shanghai in October.
