4th Beijing ASEAN Students' Games kick off

BEIJING, Nov. 11 (Xinhuanet) -- The 4th Beijing ASEAN Students' Games (BASG) opened on the playground of Beijing Language and Culture University (BLCU) Saturday.

More than 800 student athletes from ASEAN countries including Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam will compete in the Games.

The 4th BASG are composed of seven sports events, including football, basketball, volleyball, badminton, table tennis, billiards and track-and-field.

Vice President of BLCU Zhang Baojun welcomed student athletes from the ASEAN countries.

Chen Dehai, Secretary-General of ASEAN-China Centre, addressed the ceremony, saying that the purpose of the BASG is to carry forward the spirit of sports, enhance the solidarity and strengthen mutual trust and friendship among ASEAN students through active participation and fair competition.

Officials from ASEAN-China Centre as well as ASEAN diplomats were also present at the event.

The BASG are held every two years since the inaugural Games hosted by the University of International Business and Economics in 2012.
