GAZA, Nov. 11 (Xinhua) -- At least five Palestinian militants were killed on Sunday night in intensive Israeli airstrikes east of the southern Gaza Strip city of Khan Younis, medical sources said.
Five Palestinians had been so far killed and the Israeli war jets are still carrying out airstrikes on military targets, the Palestinian Red Crescent society said in a statement.
The Ministry of Interior, which is run by the Islamic Hamas movement, said on Sunday night that a number of Palestinians were killed and wounded during a security event in the southern Gaza Strip.
Eyad al-Bozzom, the ministry spokesman of the ministry, said in a message that several Palestinian members of the armed resistance were killed and wounded and the police declared a status of alert following the incident.
Al-Bozzom, however, declined to elaborate on what happened in the area.
The eyewitnesses said Israeli war jets hovered over the area and various sounds of bombs and explosions were heard.
