SAO PAULO, Nov. 12 (Xinhua) -- Uruguayan Diego Aguirre has been sacked as manager of Sao Paulo after a poor run of results, the Brazilian club said on Monday.

The announcement came two days after Sao Paulo drew 1-1 with local rivals Corinthians, a result that left the six-time Serie A champions fifth in the 20-team Brazilian top flight standings with five matches remaining in the season.

"The club thanks Diego Aguirre, his assistants Juan Verzeri and Raul Enrique, and physical trainer Fernando Pinatares for their time with the club," Sao Paulo said in a brief statement.

Assistant coach Andre Jardine will assume the manager's role until the end of the year, the club added.

Aguirre led Sao Paulo to 15 wins, 13 draws and five defeats after replacing Dorival Junior in March.
