GAZA, Nov. 14 (Xinhua) -- Hamas movement considered on Wednesday the resignation of Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman as an "Israeli confession of defeat and failure" to confront the Palestinian armed resistance.

Sami Abu Zuhri, Hamas spokesman in Gaza, said in a press statement that "Lieberman's resignation is recognition of defeat, failure and helplessness in facing the Palestinian resistance."

"It is a political victory for the Gaza Strip, which succeeded in its steadfastness against the enemy. Gaza succeeded in making a political earthquake in the political arena of occupation (Israel)," said Abu Zuhri.

Eyewitnesses in Rafah town said that "residents of Rafah town in southern Gaza Strip deliver candies and sweets in the streets to celebrate the resignation of Lieberman and the victory of the Palestinian resistance."

Hamas social media activists published photos of Ismail Haniyeh, Hamas politburo chief and wrote underneath the photo "Lieberman wanted to physically assassinate Haniyeh, but the armed Palestinian resistance politically assassinated Lieberman."

On Wednesday afternoon, the Israeli media reported that Lieberman declared his resignation and said that his party is quitting from the government of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and called for early elections.
