RIO DE JANEIRO, Nov. 22 (Xinhua) -- Vasco da Gama and Chapecoense eased their relegation fears by defeating Sao Paulo and Sport Recife respectively, in Brazil's Serie A championship on Thursday.

Andrey and Yagu Pikachu scored either side of halftime as Vasco secured a 2-0 home victory over Sao Paulo.

It was the Rio de Janeiro outfit's 10th win of the campaign and moved the club five points clear of the relegation zone with two matches remaining.

Chapecoense beat Sport 2-1 at home thanks to two goals in the first 10 minutes from Leandro Pereira. Former Brazil midfielder Michel Bastos was on target for the visitors.

Chapecoense are now 16th in the standings, two points ahead of 17th-placed Recife. The bottom four in the 20-team standings will be demoted to Serie B in 2019.

In other matches on Thursday, Bahia beat Fluminense 2-0 and Ceara overcame Parana 1-0.
