Former Barca President, Josep Lluis Nunez passes away aged 87

MADRID, Dec. 3 (Xinhua) -- Former FC Barcelona President, Josep Lluis Nunez died on Monday at the age of 87 years old, the club have confirmed.

Nunez was born just outside of Bilbao in the Basque region, he was Barca President, between 1978 to 2000 and is the longest serving President in the club's history.

His long reign saw the Camp Nou Stadium expanded to hold over 100,000 supporters, while the club won a total of 175 titles in different sporting disciplines, such as basketball, roller hockey, handball and football.

The football team won a total of 30 trophies during his presidency, including 4 Spanish league titles, 2 Copas del Rey, 4 European Cup-Winner's Cups and the European Cup, which Barca claimed with Johan Cruyff in the dugout in 1992.

Nunez is perhaps best known for the 'Dream Team' era under Cruyff, but he also set the seeds of the club's successful youth policy with the construction of the Mini Estadi, next to the Camp Nou, where the Barca B-team and women's team play their matches.

The famous 'Masia' which has been the home to such players as Andres Iniesta, Xavi Hernandez and Leo Messi, was also built during Nunez's reign.
